Lakeside Pottery Firing Information
1)
Every piece of pottery is fired twice; bisque firing and glaze firing.
2)
Firing take place approximately once a week.
3)
The firing/glazing charges per piece includes bisque and glaze firings. Most of the fee is to cover the high electric costs.
4)
Your pottery will enter the kiln if you paid for the process and a note (with your name and amount paid) is inserted in the vessel.
5)
Insure that your name and date is engraved on the bottom of your vessel.
6)
Entering the Kiln Room is not permitted
1)
Your greenware will make the next weekly firing if it is dry enough.
2)
Drying rate mainly depends on your vessels walls and bottom thickness. Very thick pieces might take weeks to dry.
3)
If fired when greenware pieces are not dry enough, those pieces will crack or even explode inside the kiln.
4)
Sometimes pottery crack during the bisque firing due to moisture in them or structural defect (e.g., wall are too thin or improper attachments of handles etc.).
5)
If greenware break / crack / explode in the kiln, you receive 50% of the firing/glazing fee you paid.
6)
Bisqued pieces will be placed on the shelves marked Bisque and be ready for glazing.
7)
Bisque firing is done at Cone 06 (1828 degrees) and takes approx 12 hours of heating and 12 hours of cooling to handling temperature (150 degrees).
1)
Your Glazed pieces are fired at least once a week.
2)
DO NOT apply glazes on the bottom of your vessel and leave at least 1/8 clearance from the bottom allowing the glaze to drip/flow without reaching the kiln shelf. If glaze touches the kiln shelves, the shelves an the your vessel will be damaged.
3)
Your fired pieces will be placed on the shelves marked Take Home.
4) Glaze firing is done at Cone 6 (2232 degrees) and takes approx 8 hours of heating and 16 hours of cooling to handling temperature (150 degrees).
