A brief history of Lakeside Pottery

After spending 15 years in the corporate world, Morty Bachar began a home pottery studio where he produced his own work for galleries and shows and taught private lessons. He loved teaching pottery and on February 26, 2002, he founded Lakeside Pottery, Ceramic School and Studio in Stamford. Morty's vision was to "build a pottery studio and school where newcomers as well as professional artists could come to create in a place with an atmosphere of warmth, sharing and love of clay." Since the studio opened it's doors five years ago there have been over 3,000 enrollments. Lakeside Pottery is a professional ceramic studio fully equipped with 10 pottery wheels, an area and equipment for sculpturing and hand building, a large selection of glazes and a kiln that is always running. In September 2004, Lakeside Pottery purchased the building where the business resides -- 543 Newfield Avenue in Stamford.

In addition to providing a place for students and professional artists to feel at home, the studio is very focused on charitable contributions, and in the past 3 years has given approximately 15% of profits back to the community.  For instance, Lakeside Pottery offers consulting services at no cost to local schools helping them to set up and maintain pottery curriculums, providing teacher training programs and donating equipment.

In December 2006, Morty Bachar and Patty Storms became business partners.  Together they look forward to expanding Lakeside Pottery's offerings while maintaining the original philosophy that gives the studio it's unique environment.

So many have contributed to the studio and school.  A special thanks to all of Lakeside Pottery's teachers who have given so much:  Jon Puzzuoli, Lily Schor, Roger Baumann, Karen Ford, Sarah Baehr, Jessica Pressley, Linda Laghi-MacKenzi, Toby Gerard, Joe Daminguez, Dot Bernworth, Sandy Weiner.  And many thanks to family, friends and fellow artists who have helped and inspired us.

Where the studio is today and future plans

Lakeside Pottery offers classes for adults, beginner to advanced. Children's programs include 8-week classes, and both summer and winter camps. Workshops including glass bead making, Raku, sculpturing and specific ceramic topics such as tall forms, altered forms and surface texture,  are offered throughout the year. There are open studio hours four days each week for artists and students to use the studio's facilities without an instructor. Lakeside Pottery provides corporate team building workshops and special events which include private lessons, family workshops, group workshops, teacher's training and parties.

Patty and Morty, with the city of Stamford, are exploring the possibility of creating an art center which would include all three-dimensional arts (ceramic, glass, metal, sculpturing wood turning, etc.)
