"Getting My Hands Dirty (Blog by Anne). This past weekend, I did something I've meant to do for quite some time: I checked out Lakeside Pottery. The last time I tried pottery was about 10 years ago. I took a class through a continuing ed program that was not Stamford's. The instructor had little interest in helping out beginners, so I spent a lot of time poking aimlessly at lumps of clay. A very different experience at Lakeside Pottery, for sure. Instructors Patty and Morty were friendly, encouraging, and very clear in their instructions. I left feeling empowered, energized, and excited to go back." Anne

"Patty and Morty,

I just wanted to thank you so much for the great workshop that you hosted yesterday. I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon with you from beginning to end!

It was great to learn some hand-building techniques from Patty and actually get a chance to dig in myself. It's been such a long time since I've been in any type of art studio, so I was completely lost in my own creation.

Morty's demonstation made me want to jump in and throw my own pot! I have no prior 'throwing' experience, and I had no idea how much detail is involved in getting the clay to 'behave' as you want it to.

I learned so much in just those two hours and can only imagine how informative (and FUN!) your classes are. I will be seeing you both soon!

Many thanks again!

"Dear Morty,

I wanted to take this opportunity to formally thank you and the staff at Lakeside Pottery for hosting a wonderful training session for the Investor Relations team from DKR Capital. All too often corporate “team building” outings are overly structured and simply boring; our experience with you was the complete antithesis. From the moment we arrived and saw the much needed sundries, we knew we were in for an enjoyable experience.

The several hours that we spent in the workshop allowed our team, some of whom were virtual strangers, to converse with one another and create a display-worthy piece of art…all while taking advantage of each other’s lack of innate pottery skill and laughing openly. It is a testament to you folks for creating an environment which was informational, educational, and most importantly comfortable, for everyone to feel at ease with their projects.

Although we were all hesitant to see the finished products, much to everyone’s delight, the fired and glazed products were much more atheistically pleasing than the works in progress. In fact, I am most certain some were even given as gifts!

Thank you again for hosting our group and thank you for providing a fun and meaningful corporate training alternative.

Kind regards,

Lindsay Sabel

"Morty Bachar is a skilled potter, exceptional teacher and a kind, patient man. He successfully unites his tremendous knowledge of pottery, and his superior ability to teach with a sensitivity to his students' proficiency and learning style. He has many techniques for simplifying a particular skill to ensure the success of his students, while he can also describe in fascinating detail the process to those interested in learning the science behind the art.

The workshop Morty has created also represents him, being both peaceful and comfortable. Within this environment he uses an array of ever-growing, quality supplies and seemingly endless creative ideas all wrapped up in a delightful enthusiasm for his students and their work."

"Morty:

We want to send you a note a sincere thanks for your work in teaching our son Brendan pottery skills. While it may not seem like a special thing to you, it is a very special thing to us to see this child look forward to your class when almost every other class that he has tried has been an unsuccessful experience.

Part of the reason for this success is his genuine interest in working with the clay; but another part of the success is your ability to relate to him on a personal level. This special ability to engage a child with your craft is just great and we appreciate it.

So, again, many thanks and we look forward to Brendan attending many more classes with you.

Regards"

"Pottery is fun. I like creating animals out of clay. Morty is a good teacher. He teaches me lots of things.

I like using the wheel most of all".

"My teenage daughter enjoys taking lessons from Morty Bachar so much that she has been asking to work with him more than once a week. She has learned so much in such a short time that it has given her self confidence that is so important at this age.

Bachar is extremely knowledgeable as well as sensitive to the needs of his students. He uses a variety of techniques to help his students create beautiful pottery with the very first piece. When my daughter brought home her first pieces, she displayed them on her shelf for everyone to see when they first enter the house.

Morty builds confidence in the students ability and most importantly their enjoyment of the craft as well as a great sense of accomplishment. I am very pleased with my daughter's enthusiasm for learning."

"Pottery is a combination of art and science. To create a successful piece requires an understanding of both, and Morty carefully explains the "cause and effect" that your hands and tools have on the clay. He offers encouragement and inspiration to try new techniques so the "artist" in you can emerge as well. To take a ball of clay and turn it into an object of beauty is a truly magical experience!"

"I have been taking pottery lessons for the past three months. I have to say, I have taken up many hobbies in the past, but learning to make pottery has been the most creative and rewarding hobby I have ever done. I love it! Although I have only been taking lessons for a few months, it feels much longer because I have learned a great deal in a short amount of time. I believe it is because I have been very fortunate to have a remarkable teacher, Morty Bachar. He wants you to learn and he wants you to enjoy it. Not only is he an incredible potter, full of knowledge, and passionate about his work -- he's also a patient and caring person. He pours himself into the love of the art - making pottery!"
